On one end of the spectrum, a younger, more liberal generation of gender rights leaders has embraced opportunities for trans athletes to compete in collegiate sports in a manner consistent with their gender identities. Thomas, who was born biologically male, competed for the Penn men’s swimming team for three years before undergoing a gender transition that included one year of testosterone suppressants. Of course, disagreements over individuals born biologically male competing in sporting events defined as “women’s sports” are not nearly as new as both sides of the gender equity debate sometimes make it seem.
