The ingredient is the most common artificial sweetener in the world. It is found in a range of products, including Diet Coke and Fanta Zero, as well as Mars' Extra chewing gum, as well as breakfast cereals and cough drops. Around 37 per cent of participants, four out of five of whom were women, ate some form of artificial sweeteners. The experts at Nord University found the consumption of artificial sweeteners was linked to a 9 per cent increase in the risk of heart disease. Other sweeteners, acesulfame potassium and sucralose, were associated with coronary heart disease risk.
