MANILA, Philippines — An Army general who played a key role during the Marawi siege in 2017 is now in charge of the military’s special operations units. Maj. Gen. Ramiro Manuel Rey was installed as commander of Special Operations Command (Socom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) last week. He will oversee the special operations forces of the Army, Air Force, and Navy. He was also designated as commander of Joint Task Group Ranao during the Marawi siege. Gen. Reynaldo Aquino replaced Rey as commander of Special Forces in a change of command ceremony last Wednesday at Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija.
