Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino 4th on Wednesday said an independent Senate would guarantee that the legislature won’t be a rubberstamp and that the will of the people would be followed. “An independent Senate also ensures check and balance between branches of government and serves as watchdog against corruption, guaranteeing that those involved in anomalies will be punished,” he added. “Also, attempts to change the 1987 Constitution to remove term limits of elected officials and change the system of government to fit their political agenda will have no chance under an independent Senate,” he added. The senator said an independent Senate could be achieved by selecting candidates who would work for the welfare of the people, not serve the interest of the administration. Similarly, former vice president Jejomar Binay on Wednesday stressed the need for an independent House of Representatives, appealing to lawmakers to end excessive partisanship.
