New York (CNN Business) Apple has come a long way from its origins as a small-time PC maker for hobbyists. But one thing has remained remarkably consistent about Apple over the past 44 years : It's been stuck in two dimensions. Apple fans have been clamoring for the Next Big Thing for some time -- particularly since Steve Jobs passed away in 2011. Apple doesn't want to be caught flat-footed if and when mainstream consumers finally adopt virtual reality and its less-closed-off cousin, augmented reality.
