The news from Primate Labs in December, which finally found evidence of a concerted effort to slow down a smartphone, led to a wave of outrage. The update fixed the issue, but also frustrated its customers with a new one, as older iPhones slowed to a crawl. Apple made the change with a software update that described “some vague notion about power management,” Poole said, and left users in the dark about what was happening to their phones. For most iPhone users, they were suddenly holding a device that was achingly slow and without any explanation why.
