Thousands of people took to the streets in Christchurch in March 2019 to protest against a Canterbury water bottling plant. A group opposed to commercial water bottlers using old industrial consents in Canterbury has taken its fight to the Court of Appeal. Aotearoa Water Action says the regional council, Environment Canterbury (ECan), wrongly allowed water consents from a former wool scourer and a freezing works to be transferred to two water bottling plants. For water bottling ECan had gone further and included a new condition in a way that was unauthorised. The rūnanga was entitled to be heard once the water bottling plant was in contemplation, she said.
