Another Memphis police officer disciplined in Tyra Nichols case

Memphis, Tenn. ( Associated Press) – The Memphis Police Department has disciplined a sixth officer for his role in the brutal beating and arrest of Tyra Nichols, a spokeswoman for the police force said Monday. Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said police officer Preston Hemphill was relieved of his duty shortly after his January 7 arrest of Nichols, who died three days later at a hospital. Nichols’ family and others who have been following the developments surrounding his brutal arrest and murder in Memphis await word on additional disciplinary action against officers who were at the scene but were not fired or charged . Video posted on Friday shows five Memphis Police Department officers using a stun gun, a baton and their fists on Nichols during his arrest on the night of Jan. 7 after a traffic stop on suspicion of reckless driving. Memphis police and the Shelby County District Attorney said the actions of the officers who appeared at the scene of the arrest are under investigation.
