Anitha NEET: Protests erupt in Tamil Nadu over medical aspirant's suicide


CHENNAI: A day after MBBS-aspirant Anitha committed suicide, impromptu demonstrations and blockades erupted across Tamil Nadu on Saturday.In Chennai, students and politicians protested at nine places, and at least 450 people, including 80 women, were arrested by police.The agitators also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Modi at two places in Chennai.While CPM cadres protested in front of Tarapore tower on Anna Salai led by its leader G Ramakrishnan, VCK cadres protested in front of DME office in Kilpauk.Agitations were also reported on Wallajah Road, Saidapet, opposite to multi specialty hospital, Neelankarai, opposite to secretariat and other places.Apprehending Jallikattu-type protests, police personnel were deployed in large numbers on the Marina Promenade to avoid students and people gathering there.Dalit girl Anitha, who scored 1,176 marks in her Class 12 examination, committed suicide as she didn't score enough on NEET to land an MBBS course. Daughter of a daily wager, she even approached the Supreme Court against NEET regimen. But it was dismissed.
