Animal abuse fears as breeders exploit demand for imported dogs during lockdown

Up to 150 dogs can be imported to the UK on one licence. Heavily pregnant dogs were also brought here and gave birth hours later. The pups are sold and the mother driven back to eastern Europe to repeat the process. The Trust has rescued 43 illegally imported dogs from central and eastern Europe, since lockdown started in March. The RSPCA’s David Bowles said the number of pregnant female dogs entering the UK from overseas has been the highest for five years.
