Andrew Coyne: Bill to ‘overhaul’ Canada’s election law falls short of Liberals’ hype

With its customary hyperbolic self-flattery, the Liberal government describes its latest creation, the Elections Modernization Act (Bill C-76), as a “generational overhaul” of Canada’s election law. So, too, the package of measures undoing the worst, most disenfranchising bits of the Harper government’s infamous Fair Elections Act are welcome. Far from the “fair and level playing field” promised, the bill would preserve all of the current system’s worst inequities. Why should fairness between parties be preferred to fairness between the individuals of which they are composed? The government says the bill is aimed at “restoring Canadians’ trust” in the democratic process.
