“Try setting that to music,” Mr. Previn recalled years later. As a pianist and as a student conductor, Mr. Previn played with radio and symphony orchestras. In addition, Mr. Previn accompanied Doris Day on an album, “Duet,” that brought out the pop star’s sexy, swinging side. His manager, Linda Petrikova, said that Mr. Previn died at his home in Manhattan but did not give a precise cause. Mr. Previn was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996 and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1998.
