G P Bhagat, founder of the ashram, said the couple contacted him two years ago after the ashram was profiled in a prominent Hindi news channel. “The couple told me that the work being done at the ashram is what Mahatma Gandhi had envisaged. After living in the US for the last four decades, Kanubhai Ramdas Gandhi and his wife Dr Shiva Laxmi Gandhi decided to live at the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram.
