There are hundreds of airport hotels in this country, but not all are created equal, and compared to destination accommodations in cities or resort settings, many seem like mere afterthoughts, simply going through the motions. Yet the overwhelming majority of “airport” hotels require the use of often cumbersome shuttles, and in the morning, these may run only every thirty minutes, requiring you to leave up to half an hour earlier than you want. As part of the recent opening of its newest airport hotel in Amsterdam’s Schiphol, Hilton Hotels just did an international survey of thousands of business and leisure travelers and released a “blue paper” on airport hotel perceptions last month. For this reason, regardless of brand, the very best airport hotels are those physically connected to the terminals, with no shuttle bus required at all. Sometimes you get stuck at an airport hotel you had never planned to visit by bad weather or cancelled flights.
