Harvard researcher Amir Attaran warned recently of a “full-blown public health disaster” from the Zika virus as a result of the Rio Olympics. The Rio Olympics already appear to be in fine form in regard to cultivating controversy. With Brazil in the midst of a spiralling political crisis, the Rio Olympics appear set to follow the familiar rote script for host nations. With the opening to the Rio Olympics coming up fast, the world is already gearing up for the usual song-and-dance that accompanies the Games. Increasingly less about athletics and more about the narrow interests of corporate and political elites, the Olympic Games have taken on a familiar pattern in recent years.
