Alert issued for Bangladeshi citizens in Maldives

An alert has been issued for Bangladeshi citizens in Maldives, according to a source at the Bangladesh Embassy in Male. The alert came in light of recent political unrest in the region and asked Bangladeshis based in Maldives to refrain from going anywhere other than their workplaces unless highly necessary. They were also asked not to take part in any political rallies or meetings. On February 5, a 15-day state of emergency was declared at a press conference in the President’s office. Following this, Maldives President Abdulla Yameen ordered the arrest of his estranged half-brother and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
