We finally lucked out with Ulysses Grant, a man considered a hapless drunk and poor officer when the Civil War broke out. Some never served until the Civil War. I’d suggest creating a national Civil War monument and museum — not to celebrate but to honor the dead and to educate the living. The Civil War happened after all when our Founding Fathers didn’t address the issue of slavery because unity was a more pressing need. Dead soldiers don’t keep the Confederacy alive — racism does.
