Al-Azhar has released the third video in its “Awareness” campaign, aiming at confronting extremist ideologies and refuting misconceptions on the sources of Islamic legislation. The new video, posted on Al-Azhar’s official Facebook page, addresses claims made by some that religious teachings should be based solely on the Holy Quran while completely excluding the Prophetic Sunnah. The institution said such arguments try to create divisions between the Quran and the Sunnah, weakening Islam’s second main source of legislation and long-standing scholarly agreement. Mahmoud al-Hawary, assistant secretary-general for daawa affairs at the Islamic Research Academy, responded to the claims by presenting religious and rational evidence supporting the authority of the Sunnah as an essential and complementary source that explains and clarifies Quranic rulings. Supervised by a group of Al-Azhar scholars and researchers, the “Awareness” campaign features short videos disseminated via the institution’s official digital platforms to promote moderation and safeguard youth against misleading ideas that challenge established religious principles.
