Airtel’s Kenya unit to merge with Telkom Kenya

New Delhi: Bharti Airtel’s subsidiary Airtel Networks Kenya Ltd will merge with Telkom Kenya Ltd to create a new entity Airtel-Telkom, which will invest in networks to accelerate the roll out of future technologies in the country, the Sunil Mittal-led company said in a statement on Friday. Airtel Kenya is already the country's second-largest telecom operator, and the merger with Telkom would strengthen its presence. Bharti established its presence in Africa by buying Kuwait-based Zain’s Africa operations for $10.7 billion in 2010. In December that year, Airtel’s Rwanda unit announced the acquisition of Tigo Rwanda Ltd, making Airtel the second-largest telecom operator in the African nation. Last month, Qatar Investment Authority said it would invest $200 million through a primary equity issuance in Airtel Africa.
