Matt had planned to take the Auckland to Kuala Lumpur route - a route he had taken at least 15 times in the last two years. Their flights had been cancelled but AirAsia had given Matt and his friends the offer of a refund, re-route or a reschedule. AirAsia began scheduled services to New Zealand in April 2011 with four-times weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch, but withdrew in May 2012 to focus on Asia and Australia.
