After the US midterm elections: what’s changed? • International Socialism

Despite stronger than expected showings by Democrats in November’s midterm elections, the Republican Party has won control of the United States House of Representatives with a narrow majority. The Democrats, in response, stressed the threat to liberal democracy posed by the Republicans’ right wing. The Democratic majority, many of whom had cynically tried to link themselves to a defanged version of the Black Lives Matter slogan when it was at the height of its popularity, dropped it during the elections. The slender Republican majority in the House of Representatives can be attributed to the four congressional seats they flipped in the state. Republican candidates reaped the benefit, triumphing in a race otherwise marked by low voter enthusiasm.
