Renewable energy projects dominate Africa’s energy sector in number, with a total of 153 projects between 2020 and 2023. Overall, ongoing infrastructure projects totalling $353 billion in investments spanning 165 projects have been committed to. Green energy makes up nearly half of all energy projectsSouthern Africa topped the list “considering the number of projects with 117 projects, predominantly from South Africa.”“North Africa dominates the region from a value perspective, dominating in green hydrogen projects and renewable energy. “However, there are several cross-country projects in North and West Africa promoting intercontinental trade agreements and the expansion of energy pools.”Close to 50% of all energy projects are focused on green energy, with green hydrogen leading “the sub-sectors with the larger investment of $290 billion.”Solar PV power plants, battery storage and green hydrogen “are leading the green energy transition.”
