Accused in Preeti Rathi acid-attack case convicted

Mumbai, Sept. 6 (PTI): A special women's court on Tuesday convicted Ankur Lal Panwar for the 2013 murder of hotel management graduate Preeti Rathi in an acid attack. Special Judge A.S. Shende convicted Panwar under Sections 302(murder) and 326B (voluntarily throwing acid) of the Indian Penal Code and is likely to hear arguments on the term of the sentence on Wednesday. Preeti, who hailed from Delhi, had died of multiple organ failure after Panwar, also a hotel management graduate, threw acid on her in May 2013. Outside the court, Panwar's mother Kailash demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation take up the case, claiming her son had been falsely implicated. Preeti's father Amar Singh Rathi hoped Panwar was awarded the capital punishment.
