Canada’s so-called “Dreamers” — undocumented immigrants who came here as children — face menacing obstacles that are preventing them from attending post-secondary institutions in Ontario and across the country. University tuition for Canadian residents is already out-of-reach for many working-class families at $6,000 to $7,000 a year, but it skyrockets up to $29,000 and even $57,000 per year for international students. The Star’s David Bruser profiled a number of Toronto Dreamers. The Canadian government offers Dreamers one chance at legitimacy, but it comes at a potentially steep cost to their families. All Canadian universities and colleges should adopt similar programs.
