Polls closed on N.L. Liberal leadership race after 21,000 votes cast

The polls closed at noon on Monday — a holiday across much of the province — with more than 21,000 votes cast since voting began last Tuesday. That turnout is lower than the 2013 Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership convention, despite the fact that more people registered to vote this time around — about 34,000 people in total. The race started in February with outgoing Premier Dwight Ball dropping a bombshell announcement of his resignation from the post. Abbott was the first to declare his candidacy for leadership, with Furey entering the ring not long after. Premier Dwight Ball, left, resigned in February but stayed on board to see Newfoundland and Labrador through the first phase of the pandemic while the official Liberal leadership race was halted.
