On Friday, Ash Regan launched her campaign to become the Scottish National Party leader and first minister. Her proposal is different from Yousaf and Forbes’ as well as opinion polls, where a lack of consistent majority support for independence is seen. This was met with criticism from the pro-independence Scottish Green party, which may refuse to cooperate with the SNP if Regan were to become leader. Yousaf argues that independence can only be achieved from a legally secure route and without consistent majority support for independence, the SNP is at a loss. Jo Cherry is the only SNP parliamentarian in Westminster to support Regan’s campaign, making her the “outsider” in this race.
