AGC asked why criminal charges against sexual abuse perpetrator were dropped

KUALA LUMPUR: Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) Commissioner for child affairs has urged the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) to explain the reason behind a decision to drop criminal charges against an alleged sexual abuse perpetrator involving a minor at a tahfiz school in Manjoi, Ipoh. Professor Datuk Noor Aziah Mohd Awal said the commission was seeking the AGC’s clarification on the decision, which the latter had done under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution; underlining the principle of the best interest of the child. She said given the grievous nature of the alleged offences, the mother of the victim was fully within her rights to commence legal action against the tahfiz school. "We advise the media to adopt appropriate and ethical rules of conduct to protect the victim’s identity. On Oct 14, Ipoh magistrate's court dismissed criminal charges on the case, two months after recognising that an offence did take place.
