Jan. 18: Trams move slowly, often slower than a brisk walk. But trams are dangerous, more so in a city that knows no traffic discipline. A deaf-mute mother of two was crushed under a tram at the Rashbehari Avenue-Lake View Road crossing on Tuesday. The state government today set up an expert committee to recommend feasible changes to all “dereserved” tram tracks — those aligned with the carriageway — so that pedestrians are not imperilled and passengers can board and alight safely. The driver and two conductors of the tram that ran over Jyoti Singh were suspended for alleged negligence pending an inquiry.
