A funeral for a friend, our eulogy for decency

And so, I found myself last week at a funeral service for a woman I had known for more than 55 years. Naomi Caspe was the kind of person whose life demanded the respect shown by a full house at her funeral. I was thinking about this country Naomi loved so much and the people here who will live after her. My friend would not countenance lying — our generation grew up knowing that was bad — and yet, today we are bombarded daily from the highest offices in the land with lie after lie after lie. Yes, I caught myself during that beautiful funeral service for a most deserving human being thinking about a future without the common sensibilities of a Naomi Caspe to help guide us.
