“It was not enough to meet with her to have a baby,” Mr. Gebreselase said. Refugees were given paltry food rations and had to wait hours in line to get water, Mr. Gebreselase said. Mr. Gebreselase moved into an apartment in the Bronx with three roommates and found work at a restaurant. For now, Mr. Gebreselase works six days a week at a restaurant, where he earns $9.25 an hour. “If you don’t work hard, you will not have,” Mr. Gebreselase said.
