A ‘one-summer wonder’?: Upcoming reports could determine fate of Edmonton’s Accidental Beach

In Alberta’s capital, the Accidental Beach just sort of happened. With two reports on the long-term feasibility of the beach coming to council’s May 24 executive committee meeting, its future is uncertain. The pair of documents — one on the feasibility of an urban beach and one on the “mitigation plan” for Accidental Beach, which the city insists on calling “Cloverdale Beach” — were supposed to come up at the mid-March meeting of the Urban Planning Committee. “On a given day at Cloverdale Beach, water quality may or may not meet health Canada guidelines,” Asfeldt said. The city did contemplate creating its own multimillion-dollar urban beach in Hawrelak Park, before deciding against it in 2013.
