Aug. 6: An 82-year-old engineer was today found smothered to death in his sprawling New Alipore home, the ransacked bedroom and a missing black suitcase leading investigators to suspect murder for gain. A towel and a piece of cloth found by the victim's bedside might have been used by the attackers to smother him, police said. A pair of spectacles was on the bed, the temples folded. The Mookerjees' house stands on an eight-cottah plot on Tollygunge Circular Road, barely 500 metres from the New Alipore fuel pump. Kabita Das, the help who was on night shift at the Mookerjee residence last night, and Subhasish were called to New Alipore police station for interrogation.
