21 passengers and Semporna boat operators get summons - Nation

KOTA KINABALU: Marine police summoned 21 tourists and passenger boat operators during safety enforcement operations in Sabah’s diving haven of Semporna during the school holidays and ahead of Hari Raya. Sabah Marine Police Region 4 commander Asst Comm Pajeri Ali said these boat operators were found to be ferrying more passengers than allowed under their licences or did not have enough life jackets and other equipment required. These were offences under the Mercantile Shipping Ordinance 1960 and summonses were issued to the errant operators, he said. A total of 85 boats and vessels have been inspected so far in the ongoing special operations that will continue until the Hari Raya celebrations, he said. He said the operations were to ensure boats plying the Semporna area followed the law and also to ensure the safety of the passengers.
