We started exporting frozen meat. The first shipment of frozen meat left Port Chalmers for Britain in 1882. A year later, freezing works opened in Christchurch, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. One of the paper’s reporters later spent “a very pleasant hour” at the freezing works, and went into some detail.
