Merv Andrews Happily returns to the birdcage after his Grand National Hurdles victory on Gay Fellow at Riccarton in 1950. OPINION: Merv Andrews was not only one of the most respected racing trainers in the land, he was one of only a few to train and ride a New Zealand Cup winner. However, mention a horse that won him a big race or point to the racing pictures on his walls and it comes back. In partnership with Brent Lewis at Bulls they won 62 races together, while Andrews' best tally was 35 in a season. Racing as Sentimental Miss, Andrews was at Trentham to watch her win the New Zealand Oaks as recently as 2019.
