17 soldiers, 4 militants dead in dawn attack on brigade HQ near Srinagar

(Agencies): Militants attacked an Indian army brigade headquarters near the line of control on Sunday, killing 17 soldiers in the most deadly such attack in Kashmir in recent years. Four fidayeen were confirmed killed after penetrating the base in Uri near the de facto border with Pakistan, an Indian army spokesman said. The army deployed helicopters to evacuate the soldiers who had been injured in the dawn attack that was followed by an hours-long gunfight. At least 78 civilians have been killed and thousands injured in street clashes with the Indian security forces using pellet guns. The United Nations will soon hold its annual general assembly in New York, where Kashmir is likely to come onto the agenda.
