Real Madrid's stranglehold on the Champions League temporarily stopped the flow of African winners of Europe's most coveted club football prize. Moroccan youngster Achraf Hakimi was a Champions League winner in 2018 with Los Blancos, ending a dry spell of five years between 2012 and 2017 with no African stars tasting Champions League success. Barcelona's Seydou Keita and Yaya Touré become two more African winners during a golden age for Barcelona alongside Eto'o in 2009.
