‘We are not safe’: Fury in Martinez after refinery spews dust for second time in 8 months

The morning after Thanksgiving, Martinez residents near the facility saw white powder on the ground, which turned out to be a substance called spent catalyst accidentally released by the refinery. About a week after the release, officials recommended that anyone cleaning up the dust wear a mask. Contra Costa County health officials said Tuesday morning’s release lasted just one minute — but that was enough to coat the ground and other surfaces. “I am deeply disappointed and, quite frankly, downright angry upon learning of yet another potentially hazardous release by the Martinez Refining Company,” Martinez Council Member Satinder Malhi said in a statement. Taylor said the refinery needs to be held accountable and install more safety equipment and enhance monitoring capabilities so that Martinez residents can protect themselves.
