‘We’ve seen too many days lately’: Thousands pay tribute at funerals of South Simcoe Consts. Morgan Russell and Devon Northrup

BARRIE, Ont.—Two South Simcoe Police Service officers killed in the line of duty last week were hailed as heroes Thursday at a funeral attended by family, friends, dignitaries and thousands of officers from across Canada. The South Simcoe officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call when they were confronted by a gunman in the basement of a home located a short distance from Lake Simcoe around 8 p.m. Oct. 11. A post-mortem conducted last Friday would have determined whether Doncaster died by a bullet fired by his own gun or by the officer’s weapon. The Ontario Provincial Police are responding to calls for service within the South Simcoe policing area during the visitations and funerals. Normal South Simcoe Police Service operations will resume Friday at 7 a.m.Thursday’s service comes soon after two other Toronto area police funerals: the Sept. 21 memorial for Toronto police Const.
