‘Speak in English’ irks members

more-inA ‘controversial’ circular issued by an official of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society that teachers should communicate only in English on the school premises or face stern punishment figured in the Legislative Council here on Thursday. TRS member Paturi Sudhakar Reddy referring to the circular demanded that it be withdrawn as the cirucular threatened to impose a salary cut and even remove the jobs of teachers who failed to comply with the instructions. SC Development Minister G. Jagadeesh Reddy said that the circular was issued with an intent to improve the communication skills of students in English and only when teachers spoke in English, students would follow the instructions. He explained that no teacher would lose his job or face salary cut for not speaking in English. However Mr. Sudhakar Reddy said that the circular was contrary to the recent legislation passed by the House that Telugu should be made a compulsory subject in all schools and SC Development Minister’s defence of ‘Speak only in English’ circular was contradictory to Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari’s call to promote Telugu language.
