THE doors to what’s been billed as a “resort airport” will formally be opened today, adding flair and much-needed capacity to the country’s second-busiest gateway. Three years after construction started, Terminal 2 of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) will be inaugurated by GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC) with President Rodrigo Duterte in attendance. “The world-class terminal is expected to increase the airport’s total handling capacity. Terminal 2 was completed ahead of schedule but the Transportation department is keeping to a July 1 start for commercial operations. Construction of the second terminal was mandated under the terms of a 25-year build-operate-transfer contract bagged by GMCAC, a partnership between Megawide Construction Corp. and India’s GMR Infrastructure, in 2014.
