‘Once-a-day’ sun creams a cancer risk, consumer watchdog finds after tests reveal poor UV protection

“Once-a-day” sun cream wears off in hours and could be leaving people at risk of skin cancer, an investigation by a consumer watchdog found. In Australia, which has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, once-a-day and “eight hour” claims have already been banned. This is the equivalent of the protection offered by a SPF30 sunscreen dropping to SPF8. After six to eight hours UV lamps showed the level of protection had “significantly” dropped below the advertised level for each. Last night Cancer Research U.K. and the British Association of Dermatologists both advised against relying on any sunscreen for extended periods in the sun without regular reapplication.
