‘It has the feel of greatness’: Father Comes Home From the Wars is the most exhilaratingly ambitious Canadian debut

Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts I, II and III) runs until August 27 at the Young Centre in Toronto. But his playing with Hero’s freedom is only partly sadistic; it’s a war between his own best and worst impulses. Walter Borden is a wily Oldest Old Man, Hero’s father-figure. This is the most exhilaratingly ambitious American play to reach us since Stephen Adly Guirgis’ The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. A black man, named Hero, is in the woods, somewhere in the South during the American Civil War.
