Once the dusk was dark enough the swimmer rose from his hiding place in the reeds and stepped into the water. A strong, broad-shouldered man, Abdullah Elamin had swum in the River Nile along the banks of Tuti Island since he was a boy. Ahead, the current was strong and the dark water into which Elamin waded was a front line. Snipers and machinegunners from two armies faced off against each other from opposing banks.
