In the fall of 2008, we heard a hit single (“Womanizer”), saw a toned body and called it: Britney has risen, Hallelujah. But nostalgia fails to explain just how much importance we place on a Britney comeback. When Spears hit rock bottom, you could support her with a t-shirt declaring “Save Britney.” When Bieber did, you could mock him with a t-shirt boasting his mug shot. She inspires pity, then hope, and every time she gets back up again it’s like she’s a living pop song. “I think it’s just a song,” she tells him, as though it would be strange for a song to be about something.
