Cabinet greenlights import of 360,000 litres of liquid oxygen

SL community in Australia donates 2 tons of medical equipment
The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne coordinated the shipment of two tons of medical equipment in nine consignments by SriLankan airlines direct flights from Melbourne to Colombo, between 09 June and 07 August, 2021. These equipment were donated by the Sri Lankan community associations and well-wishers in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne stated. Some of the lifesaving equipment donated were high flow nasal oxygen machines, oxygen concentrators, pulse oximeters, BIPAP machines, CPAP machines, infusions pumps, dialysis machines, nasal cannula oxygen delivery masks, oxygen masks and blood pressure monitors. Sri Lankan airlines granted concessionary airfreight for the delivery of the consignments while the Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry facilitated the clearance and delivery of the equipment to the Health Ministry.

Haiti earthquake death toll jumps to 1,941 with 9,900 injured

The death toll from Haiti's devastating Saturday earthquake jumped to 1,941 on Tuesday with 9,900 injured as the search for survivors resumed after Tropical Storm Grace battered the islandNearly 10,000 people were injured in a 7.2-magnitude quake that killed 1,941 others. According to an engineer working for Les Cayes Mayor, the boy's body was found Monday amid the rubble of a collapsed hospital. Haitians expressed anger and frustration after learning Tropical Storm Grace would halt the search and recovery efforts for earthquake victims.

Police arrest 284 more people over quarantine law violations
Sri Lanka Police has arrested 284 more people within the last 24 hours for failing to follow health protocols including wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing while in public. Reportedly, a total of 55,173 arrests with regard to the aforementioned offences have been made since October 30, last year. After the interprovincial travel restrictions were tightened last week, the police have beefed up monitoring at the 12 road blocks set up at entry and exit points of the Western Province. As many as 1,489 vehicles and 2,562 people have been inspected by the police at the Western Province borders. However, 545 individuals and 199 vehicles have been sent back for attempting to cross the provincial borders without permission.

Licensed Banks not asked to devalue Sri Lanka Rupee - CBSL
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) refutes the claims that it has requested licensed banks to ‘devalue’ the Sri Lankan Rupee. Issuing a statement, CBSL says that it has observed messages being circulated claiming that licensed banks have been officially asked to devalue the Sri Lanka rupee with immediate effect. However, there is no basis whatsoever for such claims, and the CBSL has not made any change to its stance or the operational arrangements on the determination of the exchange rate, the statement read. The public is also advised not to rely on false and misleading information that is being circulated through social and conventional media. Any official statement issued by the CBSL will be made by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other authorized official of the CBSL identified by name and designation, CBSL added.
