Bayobab, a pan-African digital connectivity solutions provider, partnered with MTN Opco's to land the 45,000km subsea cable at Mopo-Onibeju Lekki area of Lagos, according to Guardian Nigeria. The Akwa Ibom phase of the project has landed in Ibeno in Akwa Ibom state, South of Nigeria and is handled by the Nigerian Equinix Company, MainOne. BI AfricaCEO Frédéric Schepens said this landing represents the fourth in a series of six landings spanning five countries. He also noted that Nigerian service providers will obtain world-class capacity in carrier-neutral data centres or open-access cable landing stations on a fair and equitable basis. The consortium behind the 2Africa subsea cable is made up of several companies, including Meta, China Mobile International, MTN Global Connect, Orange, Vodafone, Egypt Telecom, Saudi Telecom Company, and the West Indian Ocean Cable Company.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brig. Marwa stated this while fielding questions from journalists during the inspection of facilities at the NDLEA barracks, which he said is almost ready for commissioning in Yola Adamawa state. “In 2018, a Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse was set up, which I had the distinct honour of being the chairman. One of the major tasks that we had was to identify the root causes of drug abuse and trafficking and make recommendations which we did. And for the NDLEA and other institutions and stakeholders like the Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, etc, we are all combining efforts in drug demand reduction.”He noted that the war against drug abuse is an all-encompassing one, which goes beyond the responsibility of only NDLEA.

The nation’s Gross Domestic Product growth fell to 2.74 per cent in 2023 from 3.10 per cent in 2022, according to new GDP report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday. This represents the slowest growth since 2020 when the economy contracted and entered into a recession by –1.92 per cent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “On an annual basis, the oil sector growth stood at -2.22 per cent in 2023 compared to -19.22 per cent in 2022. It stated, “This growth rate is lower than the 3.52 per cent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2022 and higher than the third quarter of 2023 growth of 2.54 per cent. He warned that there is likely danger ahead if the country failed to boost oil production.

The Kano state government, in its ongoing efforts to provide food assistance to the less privileged during the month of Ramadan, has inaugurated a high-powered committee for the upcoming 2024 Ramadan Feeding Programme (RFP). Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, according to a press statement issued by the his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, led the inauguration at his office. He emphasized that the program aims to support all residents of the state regardless of political affiliations. South-east leaders have alleged that there is a conspiracy to alienate Igbos from the affairs of Nigeria. In fact, the use of policy rate increases is leading to an increase in deposit and lending rates without the compensating desired reduction in the inflation rate. The current inflation in Nigeria is more of ‘supply driven’ inflation than a ‘demand driven’ one. The current low level of consumer credit in Nigeria weakens the relationship between aggregate consumption expenditure level and interest rate. To combat rising inflation in such a situation, increasing the interest rate is not the right choice. To satisfy domestic consumption demand owing to low domestic production capacity, imports of foreign goods will fill the gap.
