The African Democratic Congress has appointed and sworn in a former Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Alhaji Rahman Owokoniran, as its South West Zonal Chairman. The ceremony was conducted under the authority of the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark. (Alhaji) Rahman Akanni Owokoniran was today duly inaugurated and sworn in as the South West Zonal Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, who is the highest-ranking national officer of the party in the South West, with the full consent, approval, and authority of the National Chairman of ADC, His Excellency Senator David Mark, and the national leadership of the party,” Onita said. “The South West zonal leadership under Hon. (Alhaji) Rahman Owokoniran stands legitimate, recognised, and fully backed by the national leadership of the party,” it added.

Two Nigerians arrested in India for WhatsApp impersonation
Operatives of the police cybercrime unit in Gurgaon, India, have arrested two Nigerians for allegedly impersonating directors of Indian companies on WhatsApp to defraud unsuspecting employees. In a report published by The Times of India on Wednesday, the cybercrime unit identified the suspects as Ojo Uyiosa and another Nigerian identified simply as James. The cybercrime unit added that the suspects primarily used WhatsApp to communicate with victims, while accomplices arranged bank accounts to receive the illicit funds. The development comes amid a surge in arrests of Nigerians for cyber-related crimes in countries such as Ghana and South Africa. Last year alone, hundreds of Nigerians were reportedly arrested abroad for offences ranging from fraud and cybercrime to prostitution, raising concerns among law-abiding Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerian authorities.

Lagos Govt Urges Stakeholders on Wetlands Protection
The Lagos State Government has urged stakeholders, including traditional leaders, civil society, and development partners, to support and collaborate with the government in protecting all wetlands across the state. The call was made by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, during the 2026 World Wetlands Celebration held at the Yafin Jetty, Yafin, Badagry. He said this year’s theme, “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” highlighted the deep connection between wetlands, cultural practices, and traditional knowledge systems of communities around the world. He added that the theme also emphasised how time-honoured knowledge systems play a vital role in sustaining wetland ecosystems and preserving cultural identity. In some cases, the degradation has resulted from a lack of synergy and an existing knowledge gap between modern policymaking and traditional knowledge systems.

N10bn fraud: Court registrar faces probe over alleged exhibit tampering
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to investigate alleged tampering with exhibits in an ongoing N10bn fraud trial. We have a policy of discovery and disclosure at the Federal High Court, and we have zero tolerance for this kind of conduct. In open court, Justice Omotosho played an audio recording of Zubairu’s confession and directed the registrar to explain the circumstances surrounding the alleged tampering. “I was asked to delete some WhatsApp messages in the exhibits, with the promise that I would be given a house,” the registrar told the court. In his ruling, Justice Omotosho ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS to investigate the alleged tampering and submit their findings to the court.

Court orders British govt to pay £420m to 21 coal miners killed by colonial masters
JUSTICE Anthony Onovo of the Enugu High Court on Thursday ordered the British government to pay £20 million each to the families of the 21 coal miners killed in Enugu State in 1949 by the Colonial masters. This led to the British superintendent to shoot and kill 21 coal miners and injured 51 others. Delivering the judgment, Onovo described the massacre as unlawful and extrajudicial violation of the right to life, holding British colonial administration liable, and ordered substantial compensation, formal apologies, and diplomatic action. Kaiama killings: Gani Adams renews call for state police
Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has condemned the killing of over 100 civilians in Kaiama local government area of Kwara State, describing the attack as a gross violation of human rights and a threat to national security. The killings occurred late on Tuesday when gunmen attacked two communities in the area. The Kwara State Government said the assailants opened fire after residents refused to surrender to extremists preaching what it described as a strange doctrine. Kano Hisbah organises capacity-building seminar for female provost unit
The Kano State Hisbah Board has organised a one-day capacity-building seminar for members of its female provost unit as part of efforts to strengthen their operational skills and improve service delivery across the state.
