Indian police have arrested the owner of a huge billboard that collapsed on a petrol station and killed 16 people in the financial capital Mumbai, media reports said. Police opened a culpable homicide case against the billboard’s owner Bhavesh Bhinde who fled Mumbai in the aftermath of the collapse. He was arrested late Thursday in the tourist city of Udaipur, around 800 kilometres (497 miles) to the north, police joint commissioner Lakhmi Gautam told The Indian Express. “Bhinde has been nabbed from Udaipur where he was staying in a hotel under the name of his relative,” Gautam told the newspaper. Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, earlier this week ordered an audit of all billboards in Mumbai to prevent any repeat of the accident elsewhere.

Abia Police say they are hunting for a motorcyclist who took away three siblings in the Amaoba Ime Oboro community in the Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State on Friday, May 10, 2024. “The motorcyclist absconded with the three children while conveying them home from school. The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government to suspend the introduction of new Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) crops in the country. While moving the motion, the Lawmaker explained that genetically modified crops, commonly referred to as GM Crops, were plants used for agricultural purposes whose DNA had been altered using genetic engineering methods. He pointed out that the recent introduction of genetically modified crops in Nigeria had raised serious questions mostly about safety. “The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has been accused of approving the introduction of GM crops into Nigeria without following due process and scientific protocols. The House also mandated the committee to assess the potential health and environmental risks associated with genetically modified crops and report back within four weeks and mandated the Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.

A street beggar, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, resident in Osogbo, Osun State, was shot dead during clashes by hoodlums fighting over a booty given to them by a property owner around the Gbaemu area of the town. The deceased was said to have been hit by a stray bullet fired by the hoodlums around Asoje during a clash involving the hoodlums. One of the traders further explained, “The hoodlum from Egbatedo was coming from Station Road end and as he approached the Gbaemu junction, those hoodlums from Asoje, numbering about 30, bearing arms circled him. By the time they arrived, hoodlums from Asoje had disappeared from the area. During the clashes involving the two groups, a beggar going on the road around Asoje/Balogun Agoro Area was hit by a stray bullet and died.
