The Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says five persons have been rescued and one dead body recovered from a collapsed mosque at Papa Ajao, Mushin, on Sunday. Dr Femi Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, made this known in a statement in Lagos. Oke-Osanyintolu said that the mosque located on Yusuf Street, off Ladipo Road, Papa Ajao, collapsed while prayer was ongoing. The permanent secretary said that search and rescue operations were taking place under his supervision. He listed emergency responders at the scene to include LASEMA Response Team, the police, Lagos State Ambulance Service and Lagos State FireService.

Six newborn babies have died after a fire tore through a children’s hospital in the Indian capital, with people charging into the blaze to rescue the infants, police said Sunday. “All the 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of other people,” senior police officer Surendra Choudhary said in a statement, but adding that when they reached medical attention, six were dead. “Legal action is being taken against the owner of the hospital,” Choudhary said. He did not give further details on how the children died. The fire broke out late Saturday in the New Born Baby Care hospital in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area.

The Kebbi Pilgrims Welfare Board has announced the death of one of its pilgrims named Tawalkatu Alako from Jega Local Government Area. The board’s Executive Chairman, Alhaji Faruku Aliyu-Enabo, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday. He said, “The deceased died on Saturday after a brief illness and her funeral prayer took place at the Al-Masjid Al-Haram (Ka’aba). The chairman, on behalf of the Kebbi government, extended his heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, Kebbi pilgrims, and the entire people of the state. Aliyu-Enabo prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive her shortcomings and grant her Jannatul Firdaus.

Business owners have lamented that the recent interest rate increase by the Central Bank of Nigeria would have negative effects on businesses in the country. Concerned about the rate of kidnappings in Oyo, coupled with illegal mining being carried out, the headquarters, 2 Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan, has begun operations against the vices within its Area of Responsibility (AoR). This was disclosed by the Division’s acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Polycarp Okoye on Saturday. The operation, codenamed “Operation Omi Gbona” commenced on Tuesday, May 21, as a result of the growing incidences of kidnapping, illegal mining, armed robbery, and other crimes, currently prevalent in the area. This reportedly made them search for the nearest possible safe havens to continue their criminal activities; hence their obvious presence in the South West Region. “It is in this light, that the headquarters, 2 Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army in Ibadan, has commenced anti-kidnap and illegal mining operations, codenamed ‘OPERATION OMI GBONA,’ within 2 Division Area of Responsibility.

Nigeria is going to generate 6,000 megawatts of electricity before the end of this year, the Federal Government declared on Friday. Nigeria’s power generation currently hovers around 4,000 and 4,500MW for a population of about 200 million people. On Friday, for instance, the country’s power generation was 4,553.82MW as of 6 am that day. Adelabu vowed that power generation in Nigeria would hit 6,000MW before the end of this year, going by the improvements in the sector in the last year. He said the government was in the process of finalising contracts for Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative.
